Veins Iced Over - Veins Iced Over

Tracklist:

01. In Dark Places
02. In Hell
03. Broken Box

You know what they say, don't judge a book by its cover. Exactly the case with Veins Iced Over's miniCD. I made the same mistake when I first witnessed the rough-and-ready or even miserable, pixilated cover. It may only serve the purpose of a promo cd and nothing more, since I'm not pretty sure if this is an official release, yet again the first impression always counts. To tell you the truth I even thought that another clownish black metal act, a genre I deeply hate, knocked my front door. Thank God, Veins Iced Over have nothing to do with this kind of music. In fact, their musical content took me by surprise.

The Americans unleash a powerful sample of aggressively speedy heavy metal. Imagine something close to Judas Priest of the "Painkiller" era, Primal Fear, Iced Earth and the likes. Their tunes are absolutely astonishing. Crispy riffs, thunderous solo parts, energetic rhythm section, the main ingredients of this up tempo 3-track installment. The structure of the songs is a bit awkward, nothing to make you worry though. I mean sometimes the couplet last longer or it seems that the songs is consisted only of different couplets and no refrains. Nevertheless that doesn't say much. Their music is more than breathtaking.

There are some things though that fall into the "love it or hate it" category and that's usually a double-edged knife for a band. For instance the rough and trebling old-school production. I personally have no problem with it, even though I'd prefer a more polished one, but some may think otherwise. Another example is Voz's vocal delivery, pretty awkward if you ask me. His voice is not the problem, which by the way can be described as Ralf Scheepers in the rough, but the way he sings, sometimes even out of tone and sometimes non-stop. Again not a big problem, but a warning sign anyhow.

I don't really know whether this release is available or not, you should contact the band at www.veinsicedover.com for more info. As far as I'm concerned, Veins Iced Over is among the most pleasant surprises for 2007 and a band with great potential. I predict this 3-track miniCD to be a collector's item in some years from now some, so grab your copy as soon as possible.
