In a genre that suffers
from Dream Theater's imitators,
it's good news to discover a
group that possesses real talent and
imagination. Twin Spirits consist
of skillful musicians, which apparently
are aware of what they're doing.
Under the guidance of keyboard wizard,
Daniele Liverani, this Italian band
seems to be a hopeful one, whereas
each one of the band's members
looks its part successfully.
Twin Spirits move
in the right direction without being
unvaried. What do I mean? First of
all, they come from Italy, a country
well known for its avant-garde progressive
rock scene during the 70s, a scene
crowded of unsurpassable groups such
as Alusa Fallax, Opus Avantra, Alphataurus,
Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso etc. Secondly,
they are more into the prog rock or
melodic metal than prog metal genre
despite their classification. To be
more specific, their weakest moment
is "Power To Kill", which
is too predictable, in other words
metal by numbers and moreover it's
totally inconsonant with the rest
of the album. Their ability to compose
and perform is proven in songs like
the instrumental opening track "Projected",
the first highlight that calls to
mind Camel's "Snow Goose"
and it's dominated by pure progressive
melodies. The next highlight answers
to the name of "Back To Reality",
a melodic metal gem build on perfect
harmonies and vocals. The following
"What You Want" brings
a Pink Floyd flavor through its dim
colors and the Ermolli's exquisite
guitar solo. "Understand"
is one of the most complicated and
high finished songs, a song that reminded
me a lot of Malmsteen's "Odyssey"
and this is surely a compliment.
The next two songs,
"Fire" with Adamsen's
passionate vocals taking the lead
& "It's Just Life"
with its mid tempo sublime melody,
are also remarkable. These two tracks
seem to be more into melodic hard
rock than any other. I told you before
that Twin Spirits don't confine
themselves to metal because if they
did, it would be an unfair treatment
to their potentials… In the
epilogue there's the opus track
of the album, "The Music That
Will Heal The World". Its style
is marked by intensity, a lot of keyboards
and some of the most positive lyrics
you've read in a long time.
In my opinion, this is the 2nd truly
progressive composition, although
some of its 12 minutes could have
more instrumental passages.
Twin Spirits have
the potential to bring something new
into the prog rock world we're
living in, as long as they work up
the song's structure and they
won't be afraid to sound more
progressive. In any case, I think
that time is on their side.
