Did I ever mention
that the last 3-4 years the production
of doom metal albums was not only
fair enough as far as quantity concerns
but mainly top qualitive and amazingly
interesting, even for a non doom admirer?
According to my humble
opinion, Italy's brightest hope and
premiere doom metal outfit, Thunderstorm,
are among the leading forces of the
genre, in a worldwide basis. Actually,
the third release by Fabio 'Thunder'
and co, comes to prove that you have
to study really hard and work even
harder if you want someday to drink
the nectar of recognition & success.
Of course in the case of doom metal,
words like these may sound a little
bit irrelevant but with such an overwhelming
release as 'Faithless Soul' I surely
don't have a single disagreement.
The devoted fans of the sacred doom
community will love it and accept
it with huge enthousiasm!
You see, it's the
natural evolution of the past two
recordings by these Italian maestros…
The physical continuation of a glorious,
uncompromising attitude, full of integrity,
passion, loyalty, values and respect
for the forefathers of the territory.
The production is outstanding, the
brilliant painting on the front cover
gives you immediately the intentions
and the musical spot of the band,
not to mention the much better financial
& promotional support that Dragonheart
label (the new shelter of Thunderstorm)
is offering now…
The opening track
'Templars Of Doom' works as a small
appetite for the magnificent songs
that will follow… Next one is
"Forbidden Gates" which
has a brilliant melodic refrain, fascinating
guitar riffs and an exquisitive slow
break that left me speechless…
Probably, the more melodic and catchy
composition Thunderstorm have ever
written… From that point, the
epic/doom caravan starts its' journey.
The atmosphere of the album is haunted
by equal dozes of doom, gloom, majesty
and a distinct epic feeling that leads
me to the conclusion that they're
somehow following the tradition and
musical behavior of the early Candlemass
period. The cover version of Iron
Butterfly's classic 'In A Gadda Da
Vida', is simply stunning and it seems
that the trio transferred the initial
recording to its' style…
I've nothing more
to add, except to express my gratitude
and for everything this exceptional
bunch of musicians have offered and
still are giving to the doom metal
territory and wish them all the best
for the years to come! As for those
who still turn their back to bands
such as Thunderstorm… continue
to feed yourselves with what the music
industry gives you and leave us shining
in our solitude…
