"Merry
Christmas.
That's what people say at Christmas,
right?
Except normally they have someone
to say it to.
They have friends and family, and
they haven't been crouched naked under
a Christmas tree with a needle in
their arm..."
That was a typical
day in Nikki Sixx's life back in his
heydays with Motley Crue. A life full
of drugs, sex and loneliness. This
album is about that period of his
life and is the soundtrack to his
autobiographical book of the same
title, which has already been released.
Sixx was the heart and soul of Motley
Crue, and without his song writing
talent they would never have been
distinguishable and unique. He was
always around with several projects,
such as 58 & Brides Of Destruction,
but Sixx A.M. is obviously his climax.
"The Heroin
Diaries" is total Sixx! What
do I mean? This is one of the most
intense albums of the year 2007 and
it wasn't meant to be a Crue
album neither musically nor lyrically,
because it would be out of frame if
he wrote hard rock anthemic songs
for such a concept. The music is so
personal, phenomenal and amazing so
as to blend with the haunted lyrics
in perfect harmony. Nikki narrates
his dark past with brutal honesty,
without even thinking of make his
life story sounding a little more
painless than it actually was. If
you listen to the songs instead of
hearing them, an ocean of emotions
will touch you. With DJ Ashba on guitars
doing a fantastic job and James Michael
on vocals performing as if he lived
the same experiences, the sound turns
out to be so pompous and modern that
you'll keep coming back for
more. There is a theatrical atmosphere
in songs like the opener, "X-mas
In Hell", the dramatic "Dead
Man's Ballet" which refers
to his non-existent relationship with
his father, the soundtrack like "Courtesy
Call", and the circus like tune
of "Intermission" that
connects the two parts of the album.
Moreover, there are some astonishing
rockers, such as the keyboard oriented,
yet dark "Van Nuys", the
superb "Life Is Beautiful"
(what a tune!) and the top notch,
through its desperate lyrics, "Pray
For Me". Finally, ballads in
a consolatory tone, like "Accidents
Can Happen", the magnificent
power ballad of "Tomorrow"
and the overwhelming "Girl With
Golden Eyes" that's not
about a girlfriend but only about
heroin.
It's an absolute
fact. Nikki Sixx made a grandiose
comeback and the millions of Motley's
fans worldwide can be enthusiastic
about it. "The Heroin Diaries"
is unique, so it should be rated as
one of this year's top releases.
A must have for those who seek a Christmas
gift...
