I was expecting with
huge anticipation the new album by
Derek Sherinian, best known to the
public as the former keyboard player
of Dream Theater. His previous solo
effort 'Black Utopia' was at
least outstanding and his collaboration
with some of the most gifted musicians
of the current metal scene, simply
gave to it a fresh air of renewal
as far as the instrumental albums
concerns…
"Mythology"
didn't make it… Although the
omens were by its side I have the
strong impression that the songwriting
of Sherinian is by far, less attractive
and –the probably the most significant-
has less guitaristic work while the
majority of the songs' duration have
a distinct keyboard oriented approach.
I do respect Derek's efforts to present
to the public a totally different
musical perspective in this album
comparing to its predecessor but -personally
speaking- I found his new attempt
a little bit weak in the songwriting
area. Of course, every musician that
participates to "Mythology"
is giving the best of his performance
but this dominating keyboard sound
can't really move my senses…
For those which are
expecting a new edition of "Black
Utopia", please don't count on
it. What we have here is a generally
mediocre release performed by God
gifted players but nothing more to
call it exceptional.
