To get an idea of what SBB (Search, Break, Build) have done over the years
there's this DVD. Titled "Four Decades", it contains two
tight performances from Katowice's (the "rock capital" of
Poland) Wyspianski Theater (2007) & Spodek Hall (2006). One of the most
well known progressive bands from Poland during the 70s (1975-1980) have shared
the stage with such legends as The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Soft Machine, Thin
Lizzy, Canned Heat, Omega, Klaus Schulze (Tangerine Dream). Their sound varies
from symphonic prog to jazz-rock and, after a long period of inactivity, they
finally reunited in 2002.
Thankfully, this footage is pretty good. Imaginative camera
angles and close-ups capture every moment of the performances. It's all about
music of course and songs as "Odlot", "Walkin' Around The Stormy Bay", "Memento
Z Banalnym Tryptykiem", "New Century" & "Rainbow
Man" sound fresh and are delivered with style by a band that really seems
to enjoy it. Furthermore, musicianship is top-notch, as these skilled Polish
musicians don't offer explosions and other effects on stage, but solid
songwriting. And SBB do sound sharp here, without falling into the trap of
nostalgia, focusing on their most recent studio album "The Rock",
as well as on some well chosen older tracks. The package also includes three
interviews with the band's members, SBB's biography & discography,
plus a photo gallery. Well, it's a drawback that there isn't something
really extra in the bonuses, except the presumable DVD stuff. In any case,
it's time you discovered the first Eastern Europe's prog band that
made it outside the "Iron Curtain". Recommended.
