Project Creation
is the name of Hugo Flores', member
of Sonic Pulsar, new project band
and at the same time the title of
a sci-fi concept story that will be
completed in 3 parts, starting with
"Floating World". It talks
about the inhabitants of a dying planet,
who have developed a space-ship capable
of carrying a great number of the
population, and who are searching
for a better, new, planet to live.
And so on... the album describes the
efforts of this civilization to start
over from zero point. It may seem
like a trite sci-fi story at first,
but the proper "soundtrack"
can transform it into a masterpiece.
The question is if Hugo is capable
of doing something like that. Let's
find out...
The genre he's chosen
to follow is an easy guess. Progressive
rock that verges on the edge of Art
Rock. The use of nine extra musicians,
female -ethereal at times- vocals
and the addition of instruments such
as saxophone, sitar, flute and keyboards
next to the classic rock ones, shows
his intention to create a mystical,
special atmosphere. He achieves that
the best possible way, but it looks
to me that he's trapped into the maze
of progressive/art rock complexity
he created himself. Too many extraterrestrial
keyboards, overloaded with instruments
intros and songs and a handful of
hard and heavy riffs that can't actually
save the day. At times, or to put
it better at songs, I feel like I'm
listening to a rock version of Jean
Michel Jarre. Ok, I admit things are
not that tragic, but on the other
hand "Floating World" promises
much and offers very little to a Progressive/Art
Rock fan. You can always visit ProgRock's
web page though and find out yourselves
what Project Creation is all about.
As far as I'm concerned, better look
elsewhere. |
