Opposite Self, from Perpignan, France (where, as the band
says, "metal
is not that fashionable"), have been around since 2004. "Almost
Over" is their first EP, containing six tracks of music that could lightheartedly
be tagged as alternative metal.
Their influences are the obvious ones: Korn,
Faith No More, Helmet, A Perfect Circle and of course Tool. With the latest,
they seem to share the same spiritual quests, those referring to the big issues
of life, such as identity, life and death.
"Almost Over" is a work full of promises that unfortunately
are never fulfilled. Thankfully, they chose melody over power (or brutality)
but what the songs seem to be lacking is the sense of adventure. They all sound
like a good exercise to a well known and already heard formula. Yes, they do
know how to create an atmosphere, but unfortunately the weak production doesn’t
serve justice to the songs.
Overall, "Almost Over" isn’t bad
at all. Occasionally it is quite a pleasant experience. But they need to find
something to make a difference, they need to add some elements to their sound
in order to stand out, something to make them special. They sound capable of
doing so. We’ll be here,
ears and hearts open, waiting. |
