How
would it sound to you if you were
given the chance to hear a band whose
musical range varies between jazz
to funk, easy listening to rock,
and metal to progressive? Fusion
could be one word for it and avant-garde
could be another. You name it! Imagine
a bizarre cocktail that includes
some War (the legendary soul. jazz.
funk band) elements, a little more
of Frank Zappa's humour, metal
riffs that come out of nowhere, while
you are thinking this album belongs
to another genre, a bit of easy listening
or straight jazz, some more of Steve
Vai plus Pascal Comelade soundtrack-esque
music, and you've got the picture!
Oh, I almost forgot to mention that
this is strictly instrumental...
Guitarist and main man Christophe Godin,
bassist Ivan Rougny and drummer Jean
Pierre Frelezeau are the members of
Morglbl that have been around since
1996 and "Grotesk" is in
fact their third release. I must admit
not being sympathetic to Morglbl's
sound by listening to the first two
tracks (those wah-wah guitars were
too funky for me), but things changed
thereafter. Actually, "Buffet
Froid" & "Lieutenant
Colombin", and especially the
second one is a fine metallic edged
song. Nevertheless, it's almost
impossible to classify them under any
genre, for the reasons I've already
mentioned.
I'm aware that it's a thin
line between avant-garde and boredom,
so it's basically a matter of
personal taste and mood (given that
musicianship is self. evident) if you're
willing to give it a try. One thing's
for certain, their music isn't
stereotyped; therefore, it would
be proved to be demanding for average
listeners. |
