The 7th chapter in the series of concept albums from Germany's Metallium is the one that'll bear out if they can stand the test of time and keep clear of natural wear, outcome of repetition and sterility of inspiration, especially now that they have to stand up for their 2 previous tremendous chapters and their music stocks are high, at least in the eyes of "yours truly". It seems that Lars Ratz and his power metal squad, fully realizing the danger of releasing 3 albums the last 4 years made it through this catch piquing the metallers interest once more.
Thoroughly and starting from the obvious portions, I really liked the dark and even sinister cover and the diversification from the recent past with all the fancy and intense colors (though chapter six was the forerunner of this new "dark age"). So judging by the cover we deal with a new musical approach and the first spin vouched for it. The tempo is noticeably slowed down and proof for that is the imposing slow to mid-tempo title song, maybe the highlight in chapter seven and for me one of the best and heaviest Metallium songs ever. More emphasis was placed on melody and catchy tunes, contrary to their works so far that were governed by the "pedal to the metal" logic. For sure, some speedy outbursts exist like on "Never Die" and "Meet Your Maker", but tracks like "Hellfire" is a testament to the skills of the Germans an shows how easily they can tame their talent to more slow-mid tempo forms.
A very good piece of work on all aspects and I must point out Henning's excellent interpretation, who becomes better and better with each new album. Invest and you'll get more than your money's worth. |
