You
are pretty sure that you found another
metalcore act with such long name,
aren't you? Let me disappoint
you and tell you that Maylene and
the Sons of Disaster's new
album -and debut for Ferret Music-
is an excellent sample of modern,
multifaceted heavy rock. The second
album of this hopeful band narrates
the true tales of a female gangster
and her sons in the decade of '20
in eleven strong heavy rock tracks
that have numerous of elements to
present, from classic metal to southern
rock (songs like "Raised by
the Tide" and "Wylie" are
totally representative). MatSoD release
a true sonic assault based on the
concrete sound of three guitars (!!!)
and the exceptional rhythm section.
Their music encapsulates elements
from Queens of the Stone Age (especially
in the melodic choruses), Alabama
Thunderpussy and the retro sound
of Spiritual Beggars, all in a very
"raw" form (beware, sometimes it
gets ‘core),
while when things go to the extremes
then High on Fire rush on the stage
of their influences. Although they
seem forbidden to traditional metalers,
due to the dangerous southern/core
mix, the band seems to pay tribute
to classic heavy metal (you know,
pure '80s stuff) with their
riffs and their lead guitar parts,
which sparingly remind of Angus Young's
unrivalled performance. The clever
front cover and the absolutely fantastic
logo complete this very interesting
and well-produced release that can
entice both fans of retro sound and
modern metal. Well done guys... |
