The most recent package
that hit my mailbox was sent by a
Finnish band which is called Lost
Detour and contained the group's
new demo. Inside the biographical
note there wasn't any reference
to the band's style so I was
curious of how it was about to sound.
When this cd entered my stereo a really
heavy and sharp riff started to coming
out from the speakers. My first thought
was that I had to do with a death
metal or hardcore band. How wrong
could I be?
The demo contains
two compositions and it's almost
seventeen minutes long! I believe
those two songs are an excellent sample
of Detour's music. At first
I have to confess that this demo managed
to shake me for good! The band combines
many and different styles and sides
of the hard/heavy sound. They're
not the first people to try something
like hat since we have seen a lot
of groups experiment this way before,
with many of those tries leading to
a complete catastrophe! In our case
we're far from such a situation!
From slow atmospheric parts and acoustic
moments we head down to heavy riffs
and brutal vocals. The only characterisation
I could give to their music is "progressive"
and the closest band that comes to
my mind is Opeth. There definitely
are similarities between those two
but it's obvious that Detour
are trying to follow their own path.
In my opinion, both of the tracks
included here are excellent, especially
"Veil", a ten minutes
long hymn where progressive rock meets
death metal in a unique way! Another
reference must be made to the excellent
sound of this demo. It's strange
the fact that the band exists some
years now and they haven't released
a studio album already! I don't
know who formed and are behind Lost
Detour, but from what I've listened
they seem to be experienced since
their work in those two songs is very
professional. I would be really surprised
if I learned that this is the job
of twenty years old boys…
This demo is available
for download at the band's official
site, www.lostdetour.com,
together with their previous one,
so you can visit it and judge by yourself.
From my part I have to say that it
haunted my stereo for a long time.
I have a strong feeling that we have
to deal with a very special band here
with all the accomplishments for a
brilliant career in the field of atmospheric
progressive metal music! I wish them
good luck and I'm waiting for
their first studio release with much
anxiety. I think we've hit a
vein of gold here…I'm
really curious who's behind
this… |
