Implosion's
debut demo CD was one of my favorite
in the area of underground progressive
metal last year. The band showed remarkable
maturity in that very first release
and gave us promises for a brighter
future. Now with their second demo
CD they are back asking for us to
pay attention to them for once more.
Do they deserve it? By all means yes.
As you may know the
band performs "classic"
progressive metal with references
to the first era of Dream Theater
and Fates Warning. The band decided
to move a little bit on and add some
more elements to their music. So they
have incorporated elements by bands
such as Pain of Salvation and Machine
Head in their music, something which
is reflected on the sound of guitars.
Thankfully the addition of these elements
enhanced the final result. The sound
of "Promo 2007" is very
compact and melodic at the same time.
Songs like the opening "Anguish
in Me" might remind you Vanden
Plas, while "Holy Sin" can
be related with Dream Theater of the
"Scenes from a Memory" period.
The guest appearance of Kristoffer
Gildenlow with a bass solo in "Temptation"
is a very nice surprise and shows
that the band has the right rhetoric
(which is nothing else than its music)
to persuade such an acknowledged musician
to take part in this release.
The whole sound is
very professional, despite suspicions
for recordings in a home studio. It
is very clear that they know their
destination and the do small steps
to that direction. However the truth
is that we can't say for sure
whether the band can stand some serious
tests. For example, they present us
only two new songs and a re-recording
of an older one. I personally feel
that despite their high-level skills,
their mature songwriting and their
passionate performances are convincing
enough about their potential on a
higher level. I mean that a full-length
release is another scale that needs
other things to be measured. They
(and we) can easily get carried by
enthusiasm, but what we really need
is to keep these guys on earth and
help them capitalize their talent.
So what we need is more Implosion
and definitely we need them soon.
