Event Horizon X's
case isn't unique, but at the same
time it isn't the one you come across
frequently. There're two occasions
you'll most likely see it happen:
on the virtuoso and the extreme metal
(usually black metal) albums. If you
take a look on the "band info"
table, on your right-hand side, you'll
understand that the case I'm talking
about is the one-man band thing. Right
now, I can't recall a similar case
in the area of power metal, where
Event Horizon X, or should I say Michael
Rinakakis, belongs and this makes
him special. Our Cretan fellow seems
to have complete faith in the saying
"too many cooks spoil the broth"
and judging from the upshot of "Along
Came the Winter" he must be right.
Of course there are
three things someone should possess
so as to deliver qualitative music
all by his own; guts, talent and skills.
The first one is into Cretan's DNA,
the second and third become clear
after the first listening. Oh yes,
I credit him with all these. He has
the guts to handle all instruments
and the talent and skills to compose
well structured dynamic heavy/power
metal pieces, consisted of catchy
melodies, hard as iron and heavy as
lead riffs, melodic and technical
solos, a part "human" part
digital, yet again driving rhythm
section, and a set of screaming and
together low clean vocals. Production-wise,
Michael didn't go into all this trouble
just to hand it over to someone else.
He took care of it and came up with
a very good result, which still has
some room for improvement. What's
more, he is even responsible for the
excellent concept that talks about
the birth and course of life, the
good layout and the fairly good cover.
I'll be frank, I don't really like
this 3D design, my guess is Studio
Max or the like combined with a image-editing
software such as Photoshop, but I
can do nothing but admire him for
his skills on that part, too.
Michael seems to
be an endued with talent guy with
a bright future. I would definitely
put my money on him in the musical
stock market. I have some objections
though. Too many cooks may spoil the
broth, but that doesn't necessarily
mean that you shouldn't have more
than one. At least I would like to
see a "human" drummer (no
need to express once again my opinion
about drums programming) and a vocalist.
If Michael decides to combine his
awe-inspiring talent with some skillful
musicians, then make no mistake, Event
Horizon X will achieve great things.
