This
band with the strange name and with
the even stranger demo title comes
from Thessaloniki. The band has a
long history, since 2001, but under
different monikers and different musical
directions. After a lot of adventures
and many-many live appearances, the
five-piece band has finalized their
debut demo CD.
"Weirdom"
is comprised by four songs of total
length over twenty minutes. The musical
direction according to the band is
progressive metal/rock and this label
is adequate enough to give you a clear
image about them, but not enough to
inform you in depth. The band has
many similarities with the mighty
Psychotic Waltz. A lot of their ideas
will remind you the two first albums
of this underestimated legend. The
similarities are not restricted only
at the use of flute in songs, like
‘weirdom" (the small letter
at the beginning is intentional),
but extend to the structure of the
compositions. However the influences
are not coming only from Psychotic
Waltz, but I traced elements from
Soul Cages (at the slow parts), Mayfair
and Pain of Salvation. The band uses
violin and saxophone and tries through
the use of these instruments to create
an unearthly atmosphere. My opinion
is that they have achieved it and
their progressive metal is totally
inspired and attractive. I think that
their orchestrations can be even better,
but the production is very good. Finally
congratulations must go for the artwork
and the carefully prepared booklet.
"Weirdom"
is a release that you should acquire,
if you would like to have an overview
of promising progressive metal bands.
I suggest that you do it right away.
