Let me start this
review by giving two compliments
to Disarm Goliath. First of all,
playing real heavy metal in England
seems to be one of the rarest things
you can see nowadays. Second, I had
many years to receive a promo with
a handwritten letter with it. This
might not say anything to you, but
surely does to me. However both facts
are not hampering my objectivity
and, despite the pompous words of
the band that this EP is the best
they have done, I will try to give
my view on this release. "Raining
Steel" is the new EP from this English
band that has a rather unusual pace
in their discography. This new EP
follows the "Man, Machine & Murder",
which was issued last year, and comes
after a decade since their first
and only full length release. "Raining
Steel" contains three tracks
of heavy metal. What I find more
appropriate to describe it is that "Raining
Steel" is a sample of ‘90s
heavy metal and NWOBHM. However,
the confusion these tracks create
is caused by the numerous styles
that the band exhibits in less than
fifteen minutes. If you add some
rather unjustified changes in the
rhythm that affect seriously the
development of the tracks you will
be confronted with an interesting
case that rather poses question marks
instead of exclamation ones. Furthermore
the production could be improved
in several important areas, like
the sound of lead guitars. I do not
want to condemn this, but definitely
needs more work if the band wants
to stabilize their presence in a
reliable and notable way. I must
admit that several of the ideas in
these three tracks are very intriguing,
like those in the last track "Two
Worlds", which is the standout
moment of the EP (and quite dark).
In conclusion, it is a decent release
that deserves a lot of compliments,
probably more than mine, but also
needs a lot of hard work to attract
your eyesight.
