Doug White is an
essential singer with many abilities
and I don't really get it why he is
so underestimated, compared to other
singers. Steen Mogensen is a skilled
bass player who is searching for a
field to unfold his composing abilities.
I think that Cornerstone is the perfect
field, not only to unfold these abilities,
but also to meet with the magical
voice of White. "Once upon our
Yesterdays" is their third release,
which is close to their previous efforts.
What they play is a combination of
Rainbow's last LP, "Stranger
in us all", in which White participated,
and of course of Royal Hunt. It's
closer to the feeling of "Stranger
in us all", since Kasper Damgaard's
guitar performance is similar to uncle
Ritchie's. And believe me that it
isn't bad at all, now that we are
out of good hard rock records. I liked
"Once…" much more
than the recent mediocre releases
of Royal Hunt. Songs like the powerful
"Welcome to Forever" and
"21st Century Man" or the
mid tempo "Passion to Warfare"
and "Once Upon our Yesterdays"
are of great value and have a really
fresh sound. Some ethnic parts in
the "End of the World" are
putting some scent to the music of
Cornerstone. The production was made
by Steen Mogensen himself and is excellent,
while the whole packaging is just
nice. "Once upon our yesterdays"
is not only a decent release, but
it's more than that. It's a good album
that respects the hard rock tradition
and a field of expression of two very
good musicians.
