This is the third
album of Antimatter, the UK band that
is the sanctuary of Duncan Patterson
from Anathema. "Planetary Confinement"
is quite different than anything else
presented. The electric and electronic
elements that were found in the previous
records are removed and the music
is now almost "naked".
This is convenient for the band, since
any possible differences between the
two recording and mixing sessions
(one in UK and the other in Ireland
and France) are not observable. I
am sure that this is a very hard and
painful work for a metal fan. In many
cases it is unbearable, because of
the very depressive atmosphere. To
get an idea of the current sound of
the band, please bring to mind the
sound of Anathema in "Alternative
4", plus the acoustic moments
of Pink Floyd and the Beth Gibbons
& Rustin Man album (this goes
to the fans of Portishead and co.).
But even in depression and sadness
there is beauty and no one narrow-minded
can deny this to the band. Among the
very nice moments that "Planetary
Confinement" offers, like "The
Weight of the World" and "Legions",
you may find a very "different"
(a true cover song that is unrecognizable)
of Trouble's "Mr. White".
The dual calm force of Duncan Patterson
and Mick Moss is assisted by some
very talented musicians to fulfill
their vision and the overall result
justify their choices.
Now that the winter
is coming closer, I think that "Planetary
Confinement" is a suggested
release. It is a chance to explore
the deepest corners of your soul and
I think sometimes everyone needs it.
Therefore I recommend it not only
to the fans of the genre and the band,
but to every one of you.
PS. Metal Perspective
and I personally own an apology to
The End Records and Antimatter, because
of the big delay in the review of
the album. This was caused by the
inconsequence of a former editor of
Metal Perspective, who apart from
hurting the release and the band damaged
also the reliability of Metal Perspective.
