Like
in past times, I had to overcome an almost shocking
situation, that of a cancelled show that was taking
place far away. Fortunately, the problems coming
from the poster of that specific show and the
interest of a local district attorney were not
that serious, and arriving to the beautiful town
of Xanthi for once more I was optimistic that
this would happen, despite the bad omens. The
live show was held at an open theatre, upon an
amphitheatrically view of the city and just before
the show it started raining, for fuck’s
sake! Eventually, after a small delay and a disappointing
crowd attendance (more or less, there were 50
people around, including the members of the supporting
acts) the live show began around 22.30. All three
first bands, with Area 51 playing metalcore than
no one seemed to enjoy although there was nothing
bad at all in their sound, then followed shortly
after by Spectral Realms who were pretty young
and nervous, playing a mixture of modern heavy
and NWOSDM, close to Children Of Bodom –
which I don’t find funny at all. Overgarven
have just released their first album and where
the most experienced of the bunch, again in the
melodic heavy/death metal vein, and just then
things started moving and the handful of fans
getting geared up for what was to come. Dismember
hit the stage just before midnight, with their
new line – up featuring new drummer Tomas
Daun of the Repgugnant fame (R.I.P.), who fitted
as a fine replacement for the original member
Fred Estby, who left the band after 20 years of
dedication. Therefore their set was limited, on
the other hand we had the chance, in a close group
of folks, to listen to classics such as "Dreaming
In Red", "Skin Her Alive", "Casket
Garden", "Soon To Be Dead",
"Pieces", newer tracks such as "Autopsy"
from their latest output, "On Frozen Fields"
from "Massive…" (an album that
many still don’t find amusing, as it was
the bands first turn to melodic riffing) , an
amusing small guitar/vocals only try to co- memorize
"Pagan Saviour" cover (from "Misanthropic"
EP) and then closed with "Override To The
Overture", frist song from the all - time
classic debut album. Not affected by the attendance,
Dismember gave the biggest part of theirs to entertain
the relevant few, and that fuckin’ counts
a lot for the size of these veterans in today’s
metal scene. Surely, I enjoyed this show more
than the first time of the band in Greece (in
Rockwave fest, 2005) where we were forced to survive
under a burning sun at 6.30 in the afternoon!
