A
good fest this one, gathering in a single gig
epic, heavy and thrash metal, from bands that
no one would believe that one day would play
Greece. It's a fact that despite some
epic fans who were there for traditional sounding
Wizard and the undying Zed Yago, half of the
crowd has been there for Paradox, one of the
bands with such a few recordings in 20 years
but so devoted fans. Count me in as well.
Unfortunately, I arrived a bit late, so Wizard
has just finished their set (which I'd
like to see, btw). I've heard good words
concerning their performance; surely they've
warmed up some of the most addicted true metal
maniacs in the venue. Zed Yago with their historic
frontwoman (as one of the very first to appear
in the '80s scene) were next, playing a
bunch of their most mid-paced and kinda epic
songs, for about an hour. Although having not
a big following in Greece, like it happens with
many bands of course that are kind of big in
their homeland but not abroad, everyone seemed
to enjoy it, me too as well. Actually, I believe
I'd only have the chance to attend a show
of theirs in a European festival, so cups up
to Sold Out concert organizer for that opportunity.
Classic like blond beer, summed up the cheers
with an encore, playing their hit "Burn" fortunately,
it's still featured in some club DJs' playlists).
Next on the row were Mad Max, who were for sure
the most unknown band to the majority of the
audience. From their monicker, I'd guess they
would be one of those German bands in the Accept
vein that lit a spark two decades ago. Oh well,
these guys had more common elements with the
second era of Scorpions I'd say, more hard –rocking,
solid stuff. Not bad actually, but since the
temperature in the club was rising, they passed
unnoticed. Only the relevant few seemed to know
their tracks. Which didn't happen in Paradox,
as the club soon became a moshpit and the stage
a divers' alley! Haven't seen such
a suicidal stagediving for a long time (this
was caused also by the fact that attendants'
number was not as predicted), and the band seemed
to be enjoying themselves with so many blocks
getting on and then off stage! Luckily their
set was based upon their first two albums, "Product
of Imagination" and "Heresy",
fine examples of American thrash from this side
of the Ocean in late ‘80s. I think there
weren't more than three songs from their
neat comeback album "Collision Course" included
in their setlist plus a few from their forthcoming
album. So, most classics were heard that night,
and what a pleasure it was! This great response
was overwhelmed by the band who seemed to be
enjoying it totally. Great choice of songs, good
sound and a crowd that have been there for its
own thrill and not to fill another Saturday night's
empty program of theirs. Too bad they weren't
as many as it should
