After
an incredibly stressful and anguished day, due
to the fact that I had to travel to Athens and
also face its horrible traffic problem, I managed
to be in time, and meet with 3 good friends of
mine (Greg, thanks for the tickets). Luckily we
still had 30 minutes of spare time, enough for
me to regroup myself and relax, so as to be prepared
for a long metal night. When I entered the club
I was unpleasantly surprised with the disappointing
number of fans. Although this number was increasing
as time passed by, I still can't understand how
do we expect from Greek bands to progress furthermore,
when we don't support them with our presence to
the concerts. I can understand that most of the
fans that day had only Deadsoul Tribe in mind,
but as long as they have paid for the ticket,
why did they have to miss the chance of discovering
a new band, especially when it is a Greek one?
The only thing they can do best I think, is to
complain all the time that Greek heavy metal is
not progressing the way it should be! Tell me
which way is that guys. The progress depends on
our interest for the bands!
Anyway let's forget about that.
It was finally about time for the concert to begin.
The first to perform was Greek progsters Sound
of Silence, one of my favorite domestic groups,
that have recently release their first full-length
album (Spiritual Journey - review coming soon),
after a long period of absence and with only one
demo tape in their discography. As it was predicted
by all of us, familiar to the groups' past, they
managed to perform an almost fantastic show. All
of them are experienced and fantastic musicians
and they really deserved the applause and admiration
they received. The only bad point at their show
was the low sound of the vocals but this was not
a problem that couldn't be passed by their exceptional
singer! I must not forget to mention the excellent
cover on a Fates Warning song. (If I recall right
the first from "Pleasant shade of Gray"
cd).
After Sound of Silence it was
time for another Greek group, Sorrowful winds.
I really couldn't find a good reason for why they
had to perform when it was not programmed to,
but nevertheless it was a good chance for anybody
who hadn't listened to them before to discover
their dynamic sound. The guys played sufficiently
well. They are Greek heavy metal veterans so you
can easily understand that they couldn't do anything
else but to entertain the best possible way. The
singer though must learn that metal vocals need
some melody and not only constant screaming, and
this was obvious on the "Symbol of the Universe"
cover.
Time was passing by really slow.
I really enjoyed the other bands but I was very
anxious to listen to Deadsoul Tribe, as I didn't
have the chance to do it at their first performance
in Greece, last year I think. When Devon appeared
he announced that we should prepare ourselves
for a 3 hours show, a promise hard for me to believe,
but he really delivered the goods. They played
almost every song from the 2 deadsoul tribe cds
and some old Psychotic Waltz (What a group this
was!!!), like "Locust", "Bleeding",
"I remember" and also a Jethro Tull
cover (sorry but I can't recall the song). I was
sure that Devon Graves would impress me, but the
guy that managed to draw my attention from the
very beginning was the drummer, with his dynamic
and compact play.
During these 3 hours I took a
trip to an imaginary world, full of sounds and
depressive abstract images. The same thing I guess
happened to the rest of the crowd, which from
the very first moment was in a state of euphoria,
or constant delirium or something like that anyway.
I can't find words to describe it. The crowd of
course, rewarded the group for this, by singing
and applauding all the time and Devon didn't have
any choice but to return the favor, with his words
of praise.
Before closing this report I
want to justify myself to all those that might
ask "Was everything ok with the concert?
Nothing went wrong?". Okay, to tell you the
truth there was a big problem with the bands'
sound. You also had the impression that you were
watching a rehearsal, rather than a live concert,
because they constantly made mistakes on the songs,
lost the rhythm and all the same stuff that had
to do with the band or the sound. Devon excused
himself and said that most of the mistakes were
the result of a malfunction to the sequencer they
used. Well guys I tell you this: So what?!!! I
don't care just for the musical part of Deadsoul
tribe. The important thing for me is the respect
they showed to their fans and how close you could
feel them. Otherwise I would choose to watch a
metallica concert and fight with their security
for an autograph. That's all. |
