3rd Castle Rock Festival
[July 22-23, 2006, Ioannina's Castle, Ioannina, Greece]

Reporter: Giannis Hatzis

Castle Rock Festival Only a few hours after the unbelievable concert and I try to write down my report about the event. But before this we must say some words about C.R.F. It started in 2004 by an idea that George Gakis and after Ioannina's Spiritual Center support we already celebrate the third event and I wish this to be a standard event in the music life of Ioannina. By the last year's appearance of Glen Hughes the whole thing was on a high level, in a beautiful place, in the castle with sound and light that hasn't to be jealous from other festivals that we see in DVDs. The news that Whitesnake would be the headline group in these two days made the fans happy, because this group is well known in the rock scene and their last tour around the world left the fans almost amazed. Especially the people that have seen their latest DVD "Live... in the Still of the Night" wanted more and more them to come. It is not only luck that in a big group of people every year we discuss -before the summer- about how interesting the line up of festivals that take place is but this year the only subject was the C.R.F. and the appearance of Whitesnake was without any discussion the 2006 event.

After Saturdays' midday the city was filled with fans of music from near places, but also from distant ones. From Arta and Preveza to Thessalonica, Larissa and Patras they made the trip for this pleasant night. The waiting and the pleasure for the concert were big for me because I was in the place of the big meeting validating my ticket as an early comer. With George, my best man, but also my partner in Metal Perspective (don't forget to remind me about my triumphs) and with a lot of water bottles and semisweet wine following us, we entered the place where we would see an album with photographs of the last C.R.F. and a kiosk with CDs of the musicians of the city and also all the Whitesnake merchandise (it reminded me that I lost some thing from my disc-case and I ought to find it). Entering the concert place of C.R. we discovered that there were two tents, very comfortable and flexible; especially the big one, it was tremendous reminding me again that I was standing in front of something very professional). A huge screen for the people at the back so that they could see is one more thing that made me think about the producers' very hard work and fantasy for the C.R.F. So without thinking great thanks and congratulations are the things that we ought to give them. After wondering in the place, pretty good, especially when it begun the night to fall and the lights were fantastic.

Castle Rock FestivalOur first stop was in the place of the t-shirts and then cool places near the second stage were we would drink our wine and wait the W.A.N.T.E.D. to open the concert. At 6:30 pm in the welcoming stage a local group named "Crossroad" was welcoming the people by playing rock. At 7:00 pm W.A.N.T.E.D. entered the stage by raising the temperature to the highest levels by playing the sleaze hard rock with high spirit. To say the truth I haven't listened studio recordings from them, but I will start doing it as soon as they produce their new job from Sleazy Rider Records. They won with their sword the clapping of the audience. Little pause and then "What's the Buzz" hit the stage, a musical mix with rock influences especially from the 70s' rock based on guitar riffs, but also on the very good vocals. The clapping was expected. Final entrance to the 2nd stage was by some musicians who played some covers of already known songs. Big brake and we are moving to the big stage. A little before night fell and George Gakis and the "Trouble Makers" entered the1st stage by playing very well known traditional songs followed by an amazed audience. In the set list were hard rock songs, but also songs from their CD "Forbidden Paradise" with their ballad "Sail Away" to make the difference.

Castle Rock FestivalThe hour was almost 10:00am and the dream came true. Whitesnake were on the stage. David Coverdale and his gang in front of 4.000 spectators that were clapping and yelling at them and the whole place was on the air. The one classic song followed the other and the audience was on the seventh heaven. The play list was almost the same with the one in their latest DVD. The entire play list took about an hour and at the end the audience was cheerful. The only negative element in this case is that Coverdale's voice wasn't in a very good day, but I can't say the same for the rest of the band which were on their top. Evidence to all this is that all the people at the end was seeking for the bands' posters and C.R.F. s' one as a souvenir from this beautiful night.

Bottom line: For just another time my congratulations to the people who set the whole thing up and to all the other s who helped this event to be so good. The C.R.F. is great evidence that the well prepared festivals can take place in the countryside. As an organization it is just in the beginning. Wishes of the people is that the C.R.F. will be a standard event for every year to get such expediencies To all the people who came to the C.R.F. and to all of them who are now get knowing of that… see you next year.
