Interview with Carsten Nielsen
Interviewer: Giannis Tsakonas

Dear Carsten hi, thank you for speaking to our webzine. It's good to have you back.

I'll thank you. Thanks man!!!

Can you give us a short retrospective on your activities all this time you we absent?

Well!! I have been a football coach, coaching boys in the age of 8 – 14 for about 8 tears in a club called Brøndby IF, and I think the rest of the guys were playing music at the same time in different bands etc.

The new chapter in your book is called "When Death Comes". Would you like to give us a few details of the recording process?

We recorded the new album at the Medley Studio in Copenhagen during March and it was very funny to record the new album and discover all the new technique. A lot of technique that I haven't worked with before - most be old... (first time I've ever played to a click in a studio ...).

As far as I know, the album contains some new tunes, as well as some older stuff from unofficial recordings. How these two kinds of tracks fit together in the album? Don't you fear of sounding a bit inconsistent?

I'm pretty much sure that you'll will find the new album among one of the best album we ever done and I think that the songs fit perfectly together. But check it out yourselves and I think you will say that I'm right. At least that's what I hope…

In a music world, where different types of extreme metal (and hybrids) exist, how much competitive can Artillery be? Do you think you have to modernize your sound in order to claim something more in today's scene?

First of all, I will say that we in the band play music to satisfied ourselves and if there are somebody out there that like our new album it's just great. We have always tried to sound like ourselves and I don't think that we have changed that much trying to sound more modern if I may say so.

It seems that you continue to have some very distinctive elements of your music, like these Middle Eastern riffs. It may sound a bit silly, but where we could attribute your tendency to such riffs, especially if we consider that you are Northern European?

Well! I think it comes from our tour in the former Soviet Union back in the late 80ties where we played in some Muslim areas and there we were listening to their kind of music and some of the ideas, kind of stock in our minds... But I also think that it shows that Artillery is not afraid to try some thing that is not that common thing to do in Metal Music.

What about these bonus tracks that are available in the various editions of the CD?

The bonus tracks are - after my opinion - some very good songs and I'm very sorry that these songs only will be used as bonus tracks.

The artwork seems a bit familiar, doesn't it? I think that it's close to last year's "One foot…" DVD. This proves that some ideas have matured and are ready since long time ago. Is that true?

Yeah!! You're absolutely right about that.

Does the title "When Death Comes" has a specific meaning or is it just a title of the typical metal culture?

That's a good question, because we worked with different kind of titles to the new album and we ended up choosing "When Death Comes".

It seems that Poland has proven a good home for you. How did you got in touch with MMP and how you ended to cooperation?

It all started when Metal Mind contacted Michael a couple of years ago about the making of a box-set and we have been very happy with the work Metal Mind has done for us, so it was kind of natural signing with them and it seems that Metal Mind still are doing a great  job for the band. (Thanks)

MMP gave you the chance to record also a DVD from your Metal Mania Festival in Katowice. How do you assess this release now, after almost a year?

Well a tough one again. I think it was very funny making the DVD, but I also think that it would have been better if we recorded it now with our new material and not only the old stuff, that's on the DVD... Does this make any sense?

The promotion campaign includes also a new video for "10.000 Devils". You claim that this is the first professional video, but as far as I remember there are a few video clips available. So how different is this video clip from the rest?

This is in fact our first professional video ever - and yeah! There are a few clips available, which were something we recorded fore some TV-stations here in Denmark back in the 80ties.

All these are very interesting, so I would like to ask you if you believe that the past owned you something? Do think that now is one of your best periods of your career?

Well!!! One thing is for sure. We are working as a band now and I think that the line-up in the band is the strongest in the history of Artillery. And I'm having a good time in the company of these great guys in the band.

Before closing, what are your plans about touring and summer festivals?

I now that our booking agency are working on something, but for the moment I can't give you a strait answer on what's going to happen. (Sorry)

Dear Carsten thank you very much for the interview. I wish you all the best from the bottom of my heart and I am looking forward listening to "When Death Comes".

You're welcome and I just have to say thanks to you for letting me answer these questions and thanks to everybody who supports Artillery. Thanks again. Cheers!!!
