Hi Phill
and congratulations for your newest
album.
Thank you very much
Antonis. We are glad you appreciate
the album. It is always interesting
to exchange point of views from different
countries.
I am lucky
that I have in my hands your first
demo CD (actually you had sent it
to me). Honestly -back then- did you
believe that after few years we would
talk again for your second full length
album?
Absolutely no! In
the beginning we were just supposed
to record a demo for my own need.
I wanted to use that demo as a visiting
card. I wanted to join an already
established band, but when we got
the excellent feedback about the demo
CD "Dies Irae" we thought
that would be great to continue together.
Furthermore the relationships within
the band are very good and we are
living in the same area. It made things
much easier. Five years later, we
are finally releasing our second full
length album "Maât".
We are so pleased that things happen
this way you know, people seem to
appreciate our albums and we have
tons of future plans…But to
be honest even though we decided to
continue together after the release
of the demo, we didn’t believe
that after a few years, people would
still talk about Act of Gods. I mean
a death metal band can’t play
this kind of music to become popular,
you have to be truly dedicated and
passionate by what you do.
"Maat"
is the title of your latest work and,
if I am not mistaken, is a concept
one, isn’t it? Tell us a few
details for this.
Well, "Maât"
is a concept album about quantum physics
and astrophysics. This is such a fascinating
subject. That’s almost science
fiction when you think about it. Think
about this famous experiment where
scientists succeeded to stop the time.
Think about the possibilities offered
by extra dimensions….Think about
reality, is what we see real? All
the lyrics tell about related subjects.
The concepts established by these
two branches of the science are so
upsetting and questioning that it
is worth taking a look at it. It is
so close to science fiction…
As we told
above, this is your second album with
Osmose Productions. So far, are you
satisfied with their help?
Yes we are satisfied
with the way everything turns out
with the album. The manager of Osmose
liked the album very much and I think
he is doing his best to promote it.
Musically and artistically we are
free to do whatever we want and we
respect that. That is so important
to us.
By the way,
why you choose "Act of Gods"
as the name of your band?
To put it simply,
it was to show all the "evil"
that is done under the name of "gods".
So many people use religion to do
bad things, while they should do the
contrary. But I think it is in human
nature to be vile. Furthermore it
sounded good. By the way, we are not
a religious band. We do not believe
in any god or whatever. We put our
trust in science.

How was the
time that you spend in the studio
in order to record "Maat"?
About two weeks (recording
and mixing). I think it is a good
duration. It allows you to do a good
job. You do not make mistakes because
you are in a hurry or whatever. But
at the same time the recording sessions
remain very intense.
Do you have
any leftovers from these recording
sessions?
Not really, we have
a kind of intro what was supposed
to be on the "Stench of Centuries",
but in the end we decided that it
would not suit the album. I don’t
think we will release it anyway; it
doesn’t suit our requirements
any longer.
As a bonus
you have include a live video. Actually
do you have plans to shoot a video
clip for the new album?
We will shoot a video
clip this summer. We still didn’t
choose the song even though we have
an idea of what we want. I could not
tell you more for the moment. We still
have to complete the writing of the
script. I hope it will be done by
the end of the summer. I think a video
clip is a necessary step for a band.
Which are
your future plans for Act of Gods?
We expect a tour
during the fall and we started to
put elements together for a next album.
Otherwise we are rehearsing intensely
in preparation of a tour. We want
be so ready for that!
Do you believe
that your past in the music scene
has helped a little in order to "push"
Act of Gods?
Even though our
music is completely different from
what Mutilated used to play. We can’t
deny that it surely helped the band
a lot. It was a proof of quality for
many I think. You know sometimes the
name of a musician is more efficient
than the music itself to promote an
album. I am not telling this for me
because "Mutilated" was
not a major band of the international
scene but when you look at the reviews
done in magazines, you realize that
it is an important asset in everyone’s
mind. So it might have had an impact
on Act of Gods reputation at least
in France.
Which is
your opinion about the metal scene
in France?
It is growing and
tends to gain recognition abroad.
Look at bands like Gojira, Dagoba,
Benighted, kronos, Drowning…they
all start touring outside France and
get a positive feedback. I think the
French scene becomes more professional.
What you
expected from "Maat"?
We expect people
will like it as much as we do. It
was such a pleasure to write this
album. The concept might sound strange
for many people, but it is worth checking
out. It is pure science fiction. We
hope this album will open new gates
for us and give us the opportunity
to go forward. It is for sure our
best album.
Thank you
Phill for your time and close the
interview as you want.
Thank you very much
for this interview and for your dedication.
I hope we will be able to come and
play in your beautiful country. Pending
I wish you the best of all and a few
good summer festivals!
