Behind
the Mirror fanzine
[issue #13, November 2004]
Finally we have in
our hands the long-awaited new issue
of one the best, most known and oldest
Greek heavy/power/prog metal fanzines.
Behind the Mirror counts almost 13
years of existence (13 years, 13 issue,
that's a strange coincidence!!!) and
the name of the person in charge is
Greg Baxevanidis, a guy that has been
serving the metal underground community
since 1988. Apart from being chief
editor of Behind the Mirror, and a
really great friend, Greg is writing,
in 2-3 more fanzines and webzines,
so you can understand that he is not
a normal guy. He is a living metal
database, full of information and
knowledge of the subject. I personally
trust his opinion and instinct and
I would advise you to do the same.
But let's stop flattering
and move on to the presentation of
the fanzine. In its 60 pages you will
find a thesaurus of metal reviews,
interviews and so many other useful
articles for a dedicated metal fan,
especially the one that loves to dig
deep "underground". Specifically
now, the fanzine contains 13 very
interesting interviews (13 again!!!
I'm stating to believe that the issue
hides an encrypted message) with the
following bands: Dream Weaver, Symphorce,
Doomshine, Sound of Silence, Stormwarrior,
Event Horizon X, Wolf, Prototype,
Reverend Bizzare, Pyramaze, Marauder,
Thunderstorm and Mystery. All of them
include information about the discography,
the current line-up and the websites
(if available) of the bands, so everything
you need to know about them is right
in front of you.
Somewhere near the
start and the end of the 'zine you
will find two useful special articles.
The first one is called "Heart
of our Kingdom" and it's basically
a retrospect to 8 significant, according
to Greg, albums of the 70's, 80's
and the early 90's. If you believe
that you will read 8 retrospective
reviews from bands like Deep Purple,
Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden,
Metallica, Manowar etc. you are mistaken.
These bands may constitute the foundations
of hard rock and heavy metal, but
the purpose of Behind the Mirror,
and any other fanzine, is to get the
fan in touch with some other important
but less acknowledged acts. The second
special article is about Threshold,
Greg's favorite modern progressive
metal band. It's a collection of reviews
for all Threshold album so far and
it's a very useful guide for those
unfamiliar with the band and its majestic
tunes.
And finally we've
come to it, the heart of every magazine,
fanzine and webzine. I'm talking about
the reviews page. The specific column
is called "Defenders of the Metal
Spirit" and in here you will
be able to read almost 125 reviews
for hard rock, heavy/prog/power/
speed/doom metal albums that were
released in 2004 and late 2003. Almost
every album that belongs to the specific
genres and was released in 2004 is
included. Except from the colored
cover, its content is in grayscale
but really well written offering some
relaxed, for the eye the mind, moments
of reading.
Before closing this
report I must point out 2 things.
Firstly, Behind the Mirror is a fanzine
that mostly refers to fans of heavy/
prog/power/speed/doom metal. Fans
of extreme metal music, such as death
and black better look elsewhere. Secondly
the fanzine is exclusively written
in Greek so I believe that it will
only interest the domestic metal fans,
unless you're a fanzines' collector
or an owner of a Greek to English
dictionary. In any case if you like
to get your copy of Behind the Mirror,
or if you need to get in touch with
Greg, contact him at:
