Whiplash is an old school thrash metal band from the ‘90s. Their first two releases established them as an aggressive and hard thrash metal band, and are amongst my favorite albums from that era. Despite the wide acceptance from the audience of that time, Whiplash never got to the stature they really deserved and are generally an underrated band.
Whiplash return in 2009 after a ten year absence with a new album, "Unborn Again". In this album they explore their speed metal side more than their thrash one. As a hearing "Unborn Again" is an interesting album. It has good riffs and leads and vocals from another era. The drumming is worth mentioning and makes a difference. The compositions aren't what one might call incredible, but are easy and pleasant to listen to. Still they are not something memorable. Generally this is a compact album but relatively weak when compared with the older albums of the band.
Though many would argue that it's difficult to play old school thrash-speed and gain the approval of the audience nowadays, when the whole metal scene is so different, I believe that when the compositions are strong the music rises above simple arguments like this. I believe that with this release Whiplash mostly targeted to that acceptance by somewhat compromising to a more easy to listen sound and stayed on the main path, rather than following their own personal experience and thus offering us something special. With all these said this is a compact and balanced album, easy and pleasant to the ear that will satisfy both the old and the new fans, but it is far from being a monstrous headbanging album. |
