Noneuclid
is a German quintet established by
guitarist Morean. They are consisted
of musicians from much more famous
bands, such as Dark Fortress and
Celtic Frost (guitarist V Santura
plays as session musician). While
this gives a spot to trace their
style, it is quite difficult to categorize
Noneuclid. Of course their base is
death metal, with many thrash metal
influences and progressive metal
approaches, but this description
is quite limiting. It is one of these
cases that the music is intertwined
with the lyrics and the general concept
of the band. Thus, what it will remind
you is close to the concept that
resides in the triangle Cosmos, Existence
and Space. If you want to refer to
Noneuclid you can do so by naming
Voivod or Pestilence (more specific "Spheres").
The band uses Lovecraftian perceptions
of existence, but extends it with
the support of American writer Andrew
Hughes. The use of multiple
vocals, clean and growling, is not
working at all towards increasing
the contrast between the aggressive
and melodic aspects of their music.
Why? Because, "A Crawling Chaos" remains
an obscure and tortuous listening
throughout its forty one minutes
of its duration. The album is varied
and the band uses many textures to
represent their vision, from mid-tempo
moments to blastbeats. Moreover the
use of choirs and a string orchestra
creates an even absurd, dehumanizing
and unearthly atmosphere. Certainly
this isn’t the typical use
of choirs or orchestras as you may
witness in "Xenoglossy".
I would argue on the production in
some parts of the album, but in general
is a good technical outcome. "The
Crawling Chaos" is a fine debut
that I think that will move people
eager to discover new noteworthy
bands. In conclusion, the German
quintet has all that is required
to make an impact in underground
metal scene and is strongly suggested
to people who like the combination
of extreme and technical metal.
