It
is quite difficult to see a band
like IncomingCerebralOverdrive competing
in the San Remo Song Contest, but
I guess that it would be a hell of
experience for everybody. And that’s
why ICO is band that reaches the
extremes with characteristic easiness,
being at the same time interesting
and quite inspired. ICO label themselves
as post-hardcore, which in a way
is true, but also quite limiting.
The band uses the many aspects of
modern ‘core, such as metalcore,
hardcore and mathcore, and combines
them with industrial metal elements
to present an effective mix. Based
on sharp/scissor vocals and intriguing
guitars they deliver a blend of extreme
metal music, which produces an oppressive
and claustrophobic atmosphere. The
thing that needs improvement is the
pace of the album, which would need
some refreshing moments. The repetition
of guitar motives is an interesting
formula and serves the purpose and
the vision of the band, yet is tiring
sometimes. For example the scarce
use of keyboards showcases the ability
of the band to calm a little bit
down and provide an alternative without
losing something out of their nightmarish
atmosphere. The album was mixed by
Kurt Ballou (Converge) and mastered
by Alan Douches (Dillinger Escape
Plan, Converge, Hatebreed), facts
that assist the sound and the vision
of the band and the album comes in
a deluxe digipak edition with very
nice layout. The album also features
a video clip of the track "Slave"
and the excellent work by Alberto
Giordano must be acknowledged. |
