Transportation back to the past (beginning of the ‘90s) in the Netherlands: Death Metal is becoming huge and the dutchmen are not left behind; Pestilence, Asphyx, Pentacle, Sinister, Necroschizma, Thanatos, God Dethroned are formed to bring chaos & disorder upon the rotten mankind. Gorefest are amongst those who quickly get exposed to a bigger audience by signing to the upcoming label Nuclear Blast. Having released a couple of good records, they tend to experiment in more solid metal forms, rocking around the same time Entombed made the breakthrough with "Wolverine Blues" and Pungent Stench with "Club Mondo Bizarre". After "Chapter 13", that came out around '97 Gorefest cease to exist. Its no surprise nowadays that this combo is back.

"La Muerte", including a total of 12 tunes lasts more than an hour. Within this playing time, you'll be able to hear much decent death metal the way you wanted it, the presence of the same vokillist and drummer is evident! A big variety of tempos in between the album makes the situation reasonably "dreadful", that's death metal anyway. When you know you get to listen to the comeback of a band you like - in my case a patch from "False" upon my sleeveless jeans jacket says it all - you hope the band has kept its identity. Gorefest succeed in this, though couldn't throw away some of the innovative moments of their late period. In my opinion, it's not always pleasant to hear that, in most cases similar to theirs it scratches my head over and over creating question marks about the loyalty of such a move. "Are they devoted death metal fans or want to gain their fame back?", "Will they move on to more commercial sounds after this album? Is it a market-recognizer?" and more… Some doubts collapse when more rhythmic mid-tempo songs launch from the speakers, for example "Exorcism". Honestly, what I can't stand is nasty surprises like a gigantic Iron Maiden solo in the 3rd track, "You Could Make Me Kill", a calm passage in the middle of "Rogue State" followed by a solo, the main riff of "The New Gods"… Besides that, a more suitable to the title twisted, sick sound in the slow parts would make things horrid (=better).

Summing up, a better comeback than Pungent Stench yet not equally good to the one from Grave. I mentioned these bands as always Gorefest had similarities with.
