Here's
a band from Illinoize, US, that plays
death metal the way I haven't heard
the last years. They've been around
for almost a decade, under a different
moniker and seem not to expect to
be the next hype. The fact that they
have in their ranks a former Corpse
Vomit member isn't indicative of their
d.m. style, actually it's far from
it. A strange mixture of some riffs
Obituary, Morpheus Descends and perhaps
Samael (maybe it's more Revenant,
but it's not my idea that similarities
can be traced throughout the songs)
used, without deep sound/production
but a direct, "dry" US one
instead, in the early '90s' vein.
That doesn't mean that they're either
too slow or have the doom character
of the aforementioned, neither that
they're as fast as a Unique Leader
band. A lot of instrumental parts,
mainly few lyrics in each song and
a lot of tempo changes. Weird structure,
but the outcome is fairly enough above
the average. I can point that as a
flaw also, as, despite the fact that
a LOT of good moments are brought
together this way, the songs are kinda
confusing in their total.
This way, "Razors..."
needs from you more than a couple
of abstract listening sessions. From
my point of view, these dudes manage
to produce concrete death metal anthems,
capturing the necessary energy and
aura the genre and style needs. Grades
are usually unnecessary, so don't
blame me if this album speaks more
to you than me. Unfair or not, as
a death metal fan I surely welcome
The Everscathed to the league with
such a good, solid debut release.
Oh, and check the hidden coversong
that isn't mentioned anywhere, but
stands up as a really good surprise
after the last song. Speed metal hell,
ha,ha!
