Little
were known about Downlord before I
get their demos in CD form. It's just
when you're thinking of what some
old legend might be doing at the moment
and get some info on new projects
and so on. Downlord are fronted by
Dave Ingram (ex-Benediction/Bolt Thrower)
and play -what else- death metal.
Some of their members have played
in well-known bands as well, like
the Danish deathsters Iniquity and
Daemon (yes, that band who recorded
their debut in Sunlight Studios with
Nicke Anderson behind the drum kit
before they call some other known
blokes such as G.Hoglan afterwards).
I had lit a candle of hope before
listening to this, and it's still
burning as Downlord are between good
and evil, delivering good ideas upon
a blistering intensity. Demos included
are two, with the premium ("Full
Scale Hatred") being more slow
- paced and catchy, definitely matching
Ingram's voice (which is bred upon
such UK patterns), while on the other
hand the newer material is more brutal
and technical - to a certain level
of course. Not that unpopular in the
Danish scene where they belong to,
considering the past of their members.
Seven songs that score each about
three minutes of death metal music,
with good drumming, brief solos and
showcase a satisfying structure. Matching
up to other newcomers, Downlord undoubtedly
have many hidden aces in their sleeves,
so what we gotta see is how the gambling
will go on when they'll be putting
out their debut album. This CD/EP
- limited to 666 (hmmm…) - is
a good purchase among the death metal
stuff that got released last months,
despite the fact that there are two
demos included - it's easily comparable
to most of the stuff around after
all.
