Apocryph is formed by members of Belgian death metal/grindcore band Serial Butchers. Apocryph have a much more melodic approach to death metal and I must say that I like it more than their original band. I'd even go as far as saying that this is even a pretty good record. The songs however are rather predictable. You'd expect more exciting things would come forward out of a band, that was formed four years prior to this release. It's such a pity; this could've been so big. The production is crystal clear, the musicians all sound top notch (though I have my doubts about the drummer) and the musical direction they've chosen offers so much perspective. Yet, they seemed to have slacked in the song writing department. Then again, this release clocks in at only twenty five some minutes. So considering the limited time span they had for music on this EP, it's all pretty decent eventually. The art of the cover and booklet is pretty good, but maybe hints too much at brutal death metal with the zombies featured.
If you like Dark Tranquillity, Amon Amarth or the more melodic releases by Kreator (the last one for example), this stuff here is for you. Musically and technically they don't differ much from the big names in the genre. The big names however better Apocryph in the song writing department. Production wise, they couldn't have wished for a better producer. I don't know if this album is still obtainable, because Apocryph ceased to exist unfortunately. If you breathe melodic death metal, you should add this to your collection. It’s well worth the chase. |
